What Is Superheated Steam Cleaning?

Superheated steam cleaning is a form of industrial cleaning used by professionals. Like a domestic steam cleaner used on carpets, soft furnishings and fabrics, it cleans with water and often without the need for chemicals.

However, unlike the domestic version, the water is heated to far greater temperatures.

A professional system, such as the ThermaTech (made by Restorative Techniques) or DOFF (made by Stonehealth), can deliver a focused spray at up to 150 degrees Celsius and pressures of up to 140 bar using an electric or diesel pump.

It is very often specified as ‘DOFF’ cleaning, but that simply refers to one particular manufacturer’s product.

What is superheated steam cleaning useful for?

The process is designed to be used on hard surfaces, such as bricks, concrete and stone, making it ideal for masonry cleaning.

Buildings and paved areas that have developed a layer of pollutants and organic matter can be gently cleaned without the abrasiveness of sandblasting.

It can be used to remove different materials, such as hardened chewing gum from pavements or unwanted paint and surface treatments from walls.

High temperatures mean it can be used to melt wax, oil and bitumen-based contaminants that have adhered to the surfaces.

Is superheated steam cleaning safe?

It avoids the use of any solvents and acids, often involved in cleaning masonry, which can damage surfaces. Due to the process not needing chemicals and the minimal amount of water required, it can be used on heritage and listed buildings with minimal hurdles.

In environmental and safety risk assessments, it is compliant with Health and Safety Executive COSHH standards when not used with cleaning agents. When using only water, it does not leave any by-products or residue behind on the masonry.

However, superheated steam cleaning can be used in conjunction with cleaning agents for stubborn soiling and problem contaminants.

Can anyone use superheated steam cleaning?

While it does not require hazardous chemicals, the high temperatures and pressure mean it should only be used by trained professionals. Talk to a specialist who will have the equipment and knowledge and can give you qualified advice on the best cleaning service for your masonry.
